Brief history of Finnegaarden

Finnegaarden got its name from the farm Finne at Voss approximately 1, 5 hours from Bergen. It is first mentioned in 1403, when Gudrun Sigurdsdatter owned the farm.In the mid 15 hundreds part of Finne belonged to Erik Rosenkrantz. Not until after Bergen burnt in 1702 did Finnegaarden become the Office's (The Hanseatic Office) most southern farm.

It was owned by German traders for a long time. In the 19th century it was taken over by the Lude family, and today it is owned by Agnethe Lude Sande.

Finnegaarden is built as a Hanseatic trade house. In earlier years, goods such as dried fish, wheat, and leather were bought and sold at this property. Through the centuries the building has been occupied and used by German, Dutch and Norwegian trade's people, as a work place, housing, warehouse, and sometimes also eatery (restaurant).

Together with the Hanseatic Museum, Finnegaarden is part of Bryggen in Bergen, which is on UNESCO's World Heritage List.

The building as it can be seen today was built after the Bergen fire of 1702.

Today Finnegaarden functions as one of thebest restaurant houses in Bergen.

Finnegardsstuene is among the country's finest dining places - a perfect place for a gastronomical experience.

Mezzo is a beautiful and elegant restaurant, and is among Bergen's most popular places.

Casa del Toro presents an exotic dining experience in a unique environment.

The last addition to Finnegaarden is the Hanseatic Hotel. It is one of a kind, because of its rich history and its central location together with its unique decoration and environment.

Finnegaarden is now a house for the future, where the culture and history reminds us of our heritage and values, and how the antiquities will help us evolve and grow together with all our employees, guests and visitors.

Yours Truly,
Agnethe Lude Sande
